Students currently in 5th-8th grade are invited to come explore picture books! Over the course of this class we will read and discuss 6-8 picture books taking a close look at each story. Picture Book Study (Grades 5th-8th): Do you enjoy writing? Studying published works is an important thing for all writers to do! Let's have fun exploring stories from your younger days. *Please note, adult supervision is also required while we are in the kitchen. Let's stir, bake, and saute together for a couple weeks! Kids will love getting their hands dirty in this delicious class. Learn the history of some of your favorite foods: from pizza to focaccia, from chicken fingers to chocolate mousse. Let's Get Cooking! (Grades 3rd-8th): Based on her food history and cooking for kids podcast, Roots & Fruits, instructor Claudia Hanna will teach some favorite age old recipes. These fables are set in an Arctic habitat. Author Rhonda McDonald will share her book, Fables from the North. We will turn your fable into an illustrated book for you to keep.

These original fables will be acted out with props. Do you like to write? We will create a new background for a familiar fable and rewrite it. Tell Me a Fable (Grades 2nd-5th): Did you know animals can teach us lessons? Who was Aesop? In this interactive class we will read familiar and not so familiar fables to see what lessons they share.

*Students must have access to a camera or a cell phone camera.īook Club (Grades 4th-7th): Calling all bookworms! Students currently in 4th-7th grade are invited to join a book club! During this course, we will read the classic tale "The Wind in the Willows" by Kenneth Grahame (accessible free online through ), explore the book through guided discussion, and flex our creative muscles in extension activities completed outside of class with the option to share them with classmates the next day if desired (students will not need to purchase anything for the extension activities- we will use common household materials).Īffinity Photo Workshop (Grades 6th-8th): Are you interested in learning how to edit photos? Affinity Photo is making waves as a real alternative to Adobe Photoshop at a reasonable price. Participants will learn tips and tricks to get a great photo every time. Photography for Elementary Students (Grades 3rd-5th): Students will learn how to operate a camera, explore elements of photo composition and lighting, and learn the basic tools of Photoshop in order to edit photos prior to publishing photo galleries. Students of all levels are welcome to join to learn more about the importance of expressing yourself, moving your body, and staying healthy in a fun way!

We will then learn the different styles of dance consisting of jazz, hip hop, contemporary, and more. Dancing Dukes (Grades 3rd-5th): Come dance with the JMU Dancing Dukes! Classes will begin with a warm up and stretch along with learning the basics of dance technique. We will spend the second week of class with an Australian Labradoodle puppy! We will learn how to teach her her name, how to potty train her, how to do clicker training with her, and more!

Pick a Pet (Grades 2nd-5th): What animals live in your home? What animal are you interested in as a pet? During the first week of class, we will explore pet needs by researching what type of food they eat, if they need to be groomed, how to prepare for vet visits, how much they cost, how to train them, etc. Grab some paper, crayons, markers, color pencils, or any medium of your choice and join us! Directed drawing encourages students to follow directions, pay attention to detail, and build confidence in their creative abilities. They will learn how to turn a simple shape into a masterpiece they will want to display. The teacher will guide the students through step-by-step instructions to complete various pictures. Directed Drawing (Grades K-2nd): Directed drawings give students an outlet to express themselves and discover their inner artist.
